Davy Carson's buzzer-beater saw Monkstown end Lisnagarvey’s six-game winning streak to knock the Ulster side off the top of the EY Men's Hockey League, with Three Rock Rovers the beneficiaries.

Carson’s strike came in overtime from the second wave of a penalty corner to crown a wonderful contest at Rathdown with the hosts winning 4-3.

They were in the mood from the outset of an electric contest with Guy Sarratt batting in an early opener, countered by Troy Chambers’ strike on the spin.

Garvey came on strong in the last quarter with Daniel Nelson and a typical James Lorimer drag-flick tied things up at 3-3 but Monkstown summoned one more penalty corner in the dying seconds which Carson swooped on after Milliken had initially saved from Sarratt.

It was the second time in three weeks Town have beaten the side top of the rankings at the start of the day following their 1-0 success against Glenanne.

Next up, they face the newest leaders Three Rock Rovers who eased to a 4-1 win over YMCA with four goals in the first hour taking the sting out of the contest.

Ali Empey scored the first and the fourth either side of Ryan Spencer and Ben Johnson goals. The Y improved in the second half and got one back through Ben Campbell but remain just two points above the relegation playoff place.

Annadale, meanwhile, produced a remarkable reversal of fortunes. They lost 5-1 at home to Pembroke in the Irish Senior Cup but prevailed 4-0 away to the same opposition in the league.

Michael Robson and Tim Cross were the inspirations, the former breaking the deadlock with a goal he created and finished with significant help from Robbie Davidson.

Cross scored a corner and a rebound off another of his shots was smashed into the top corner by Owen McElhinney. Sweeper Cross then completed the scoring with a backhand finish from play having started the move inside his own 23-metre zone.

Banbridge were too strong for UCD in a 3-0 success at Havelock Park while Glenanne defeated Corinthian 1-0 courtesy of a seventh-minute penalty stroke from Shane O’Donoghue.
