Having been named RTÉ Sport Team of the Year on Saturday, Ireland’s women’s hockey Green Army turn their attention to 2019, with manager Graham Shaw announcing his squad for a three-game series with Chile.

They won the prestigious prize following their thrilling run to the world cup final in London during the summer, coming home with silver medals.

Their opening games of the New Year will take place on 12, 13, 15 and 16 January against a Chile side ranked 16th in the world in Santiago. Ireland have climbed to eighth in the rankings since their world cup exploits.

"While 2018 has been the most incredible, historic year for the Green Army we firmly have our sights set on 2019 and Olympic qualification," said Shaw, looking ahead to Tokyo 2020.

"We are keen to hit the ground running in the New Year and this long warm weather camp in Chile is the ideal start for us. Chile are an improving side that will prove valuable opponents for our entire squad, both senior members and newer additions to our panel."

Shaw will bring an experienced squad to South Africa, with 26 players in the extended party for the camp and four games.
