Great Britain's ladies defeated Germany in the final of the Ladies' Setanta Sports Trophy 2008 at Belfield in Dublin.
Last year’s winners Germany felt the pressure from the start when GB scored the first of four goals in only the seventh minute of play.
Germany will no doubt be disappointed with a performance that saw them play well below what they are capable of, but may find some consolation in the fact that one of their players, Maike Stockel, was awarded player of the tournament.
Earlier in the day, Ireland took on South Africa for the third/fourth place play off, with both sides providing some entertaining hockey in the first half.
Ireland earned three penalty corners, while the South Africans won four, but neither side could capitalise on these chances.
With only seconds of the first half remaining, Ireland eventually broke through in style, when a long corner fed in by Cliodhna Sargent was met in the circle by Lisa Jacob, whose superb deflection ensured Ireland took the lead at half time.
South Africa were not happy to trail, and earned four corners in the second half. Captain Marsha Marescia converted the first of these with stunning precision to level the game.
And nine minutes later they took the lead, Tarryn Bright scoring from open play.
Despite earning no short corners in the second half, Ireland continued to create some excellent chances, but their failure to convert haunted them once again, and the game ended in a 2-1 victory for South Africa.
