It was a day of mixed fortunes for the Ireland teams at the Setanta Sports Trophy at UCD.
The women's team put in an impressive performance but were beaten by Germany, who are ranked at number three in the world.
Ireland had several chances to take the lead but failed to do so and were punished when Anke Kuhn struck home the only goal of the game after 13 minutes.
Commenting after the game was Ireland coach Gene Muller said: 'We really played well tonight and there was some very good performances on the field particularly from Clarke and McCay who put on top performances.
'Our forwards played with cohesion and we produced some good opportunities.'
The men continued to show the same entertaining play they had done in excelling against Pakistan when they drew 3-3 with Canada.
Ireland led 2-1 at half-time thanks to goals from Eugene Magee and Alan Southern with Mark Pearson replying for Canada.
Mitch Darling put Ireland further ahead just after half-time but Canada fought back to claim a draw thanks to goals from Ravi Kahlon and Robert Shortt.
Speaking after the game, Ireland coach Dave Passmore said: 'This was a pleasing start with some good finishing by our young players, but it was disappointing to concede two goals from almost identical situations and as a young group we have to learn quickly from these situations to prevent us repeating our mistakes.'
