A last-minute penalty corner denied Ireland victory in the opening match of the women's World Cup qualifier as the USA stole a 1-1 draw in Rome today.

Loreto's Cathy McKean gave the Irish a 41st-minute lead after a good break down the right but with seconds remaining Kelly Doton's penalty corner strike took a deflection off a defender to beat Angela Platt.

Ireland's next match is against South Korea on Thursday.
