Hermes retain Women's Senior title

Hermes retained their ESB Women’s Irish Senior Hockey Cup title today after a 1-0 win over Old Alexandra at the National Stadium in UCD.

The winner came thanks to an early goal from United States international Molly Powers.

Catriona Carey created the eighth-minute opening with a powerful run, and Powers swept home Carey’s cross to the Old Alex goal.

Old Alex, who lost pivotal midfielder Jamie Deacon to injury, tried gamely but territorially, their Booterstown opponents remained on top. Carey went closest to adding a second, late on in the first half.

Hermes’ fourth Cup win since 1997 sees them qualify as Ireland’s representatives for next season’s European Cup Winners’ Cup.
