Pembroke announce South African appointment

Pembroke Wanderers Hockey Club have appointed Craig Fulton as director of coaching and player-coach to their senior men's squad.

The South African International will assume the post in September on a three-year contract, during which time he will also oversee a number of coaching developments in the club.

As a player, Fulton has been capped 191 times for South Africa, including the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games and the Athens Olympics in 2004.  He has also played in the 1998 and 2002 Commonwealth Games and, most recently, in the 2005 Aslan Shar Cup in Malaysia.

Fulton's coaching achievements include being named Coach of the Year at the University of Pretoria in 2003.  He continued his coaching career in England with Chelmsford where they finished the 2003 season as runners-up in Division 1. The following year in 2004, with Fulton as coach, Chelmsford achieved promotion to the National Premier League.

Fulton's wife Natalie has many hockey achievements at international level and her vast experience for South Africa will be a huge addition to the Pembroke senior ladies' team.  Natalie was first selected for South Africa in 1997 and as well as playing in the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester and the 2002 World Cup in Perth, she represented South Africa at the Athens Olympics last year.

Wanderers also welcome the return of Irish international Justin Sherriff from Belgium where he has been playing with Dragons for two of the past three seasons.  During his time in Antwerp with the Dragons Justin was involved with under-age coaching and youth player development and these skills will be of great benefit to Pembroke's flourishing youth sections.

This is an exciting time for Pembroke Wanderers on and off the pitch with the opening of their new €1m development at Serpentine Avenue, incorporating a new water-based pitch and sand-based practice pitch, at the beginning of August.
