India defeated England to take Women's hockey gold in controversial circumstances at the Commonwealth games today. India's Mamta Kharab scored the winning goal from a penalty corner just as the half-time hooter sounded in extra-time. Initially the referee ruled the goal out but, after consulting other officials, it was given and the Indians began their gold medal celebrations.
The host nation, who had launched a tremendous fightback after falling 2-0 behind to take the game into extra-time, immediately launched an official appeal. But after a wait of around 45 minutes, International Hockey Federation officials announced the goal would stand and India were Commonwealth champions.
