The Irish Senior ladies hockey team, competing at the World Cup Qualifying tournament in Amiens, France, will take part in a sudden death penalty shoot tomorrow morning at 9am Irish time to decide their fate. The competition should have been taken tonight at 7pm but thunder and lightening in Amiens has forced the reschedule.
The Irish played Lithuania at 12pm Irish time today. Following a 2-2 draw, Ireland appeared to have lost their bid for the World Cup when the penalty shoot went against them, 7-6. In scenes of high drama, eleven penalties taken by both sides before the apparent Lithuania winner was scored.
The Tournament Appeals Committee ordered the sudden death phase of the penalty shoot out to be retaken following an Irish protest as a result of irregularities in the sequence first time around. In the morning, Lithuania will take the first stroke, followed by Ireland. It is sudden death with a World Cup Finals place for the winners.
