The Irish Ladies hockey team will take on Lithuania in a play-off on Saturday for a place in next year's World Cup finals. In Pool B this afternoon, Scotland beat Canada 2-0, leaving them in fourth position with Lithuania taking up third spot in the final standings. As a consequence of this result, Ireland have been drawn against Lithuania with the match taking place in Amiens at 12 noon Irish time on Saturday. Scotland, meanwhile, will take on India in Abbeville at the same time.
The winners of these two games will automatically qualify for the World Cup finals in Perth next year and will also play each other for 5th/6th position on Sunday afternoon. The losers of Saturday's play-off ties will face each other for 7th/8th position and the team that wins that match and finishes in 7th spot will have one more chance of qualifying for the finals by taking on the US in a best of three test match series. This team will have home advantage against the Americans and the series will take place sometime before February 2002.
