Anna Foster is best placed of the Irish quartet competing at the Lalla Meryem Cup in Morrocco, sitting on level par after the first round, five shots behind leader Kelsey Bennett of Australia.

Foster started brightly and claimed birdies on three of her opening four holes, but a bogey on the par-3 third and another on the fifth saw her undo much of her early good work.

The Dubliner steadied the ship and hit eight consecutive pars before a bogey on the 14th saw her drop to level par, where she stayed.

Aine Donegan is a shot behind Foster on +1 after an eventful round that featured four birdies and five bogeys, while Sara Byrne sits on +2.

Armagh golfer Annabelle Wilson has the most work to on Friday to make the cut. She's on +3 and despite hitting a birdie on her opening hole, five bogeys saw her sign for a round of 76.

At the top of leaderboard, Bennett holds a two-shot lead over a chasing pack of ten golfers.

The Australian carded seven birdies and dropped two shots to finish the day on -5, two clear of winner of last year's Order of Merit Shannon Tan who sits on -3.

Hannah Screen, Teresa Toscano, Anna Huang and Chiara Noja are among those have two shots to make up on the leader.

"It was really solid," Bennett said afterwards. "Obviously starting off with two birdies always helps. Michael [Baines, her caddie] and I just went through some really good processes. I rolled in some nice putts too which always helps."
