LIV Golf has postponed its June event in New Orleans amid ongoing speculation about the Saudi-backed breakaway's long-term future.

Organisers say the decision has been made due to concerns the soccer World Cup could impact attendances and viewership, while issues such as high temperatures and course condition are also factors.

The tournament was scheduled for 25-28 June at Bayou Oaks at City Park. The World Cup takes place in the US, Canada and Mexico from 11 June to 19 July.

Louisiana governor Jeff Landry said in a statement the state had already paid out $3.2m (€2.73m) under its contract with LIV and although the $1.2m (€1.02m) hosting fee would be reimbursed, $2m (€1.7m) had already been invested in upgrading the Bayou Oaks course.

Staff were told earlier this year backing from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund was guaranteed only until the end of this year, but O’Neil last week claimed LIV would continue "uninterrupted and at full throttle".

The New Orleans postponement means LIV will have no tournaments in a six-week period between early June and late July.

The Louisiana event was the only LIV tournament on the schedule during the World Cup.
