Anna Foster is two-under-par after the opening day in South Africa

Anna Foster is leading the Irish challenge after the opening round at the Joburg Ladies Open.

The Dubliner carded a two-under 71 at the tournament in South Africa which leaves her five shots off the leaders.

French duo Agathe Laisne and Ariane Klotz are sharing that lead with the USA's Brianna Navarrosa on seven-under after all three carded 66s.

That trio are a further shot clear of Justice Bosio (Australia), Laura Beveridge (Scotland) and Jess Baker (England).

FULL LEADERBOARD

Foster, the last of three Irish in the field to tee off on Thursday, had an up-and-down start on the front nine.

A birdie on the first was followed by a bogey on two, before the same pattern held on three and four.

Back-to-back birdies lifted her to two under after six but bogeys on seven and nine saw her back at level par going into the back nine.

However, her game settled down the stretch and the 24-year-old birdied 14 and 17 to sit just inside the top 40.

Olivia Mehaffey is two shots further back after a level-par 73. The Down native managed birdies on eight, 10, 16 and 17 but a quartet of bogeys - three of which arrived on her opening nine holes - prevented her from getting under par.

Áine Donegan endured an even more difficult day, with an eight-over 81 leaving the Clare woman bottom of the leaderboard and 120th overall.

She managed one birdie with her final putt on the par-5 18th in a round otherwise littered with bogeys, including four in succession from holes five to eight.
