Maguire and Walsh in a battle to make the cut at Founders Cup

Leona Maguire and Lauren Walsh are both in a fight to make the cut after the first round of the Fortinet Founders Cup.

The Irish duo struggled during the opening round in Menlo Park, California, both signing for a two-over round of 74, with the projected cut currently at level par.

Maguire got off to a nightmare start. After making par on the opening hole, she took eight shots to hole out at the par-four second and was up against it from there.

The Cavan golfer did recover from that early setback, hitting five birdies, but three bogeys on the back nine left her well off the pace.

Walsh meanwhile did all the damage in the closing stages of her opening round. She parred each of the first 11 holes before a birdie on the 12th saw her make moves.

However that was followed up by bogey-bogey on the next two holes and although she birdied the 17th, a double bogey on the 18th left her on two-over.

Hyo Joo Kim of South Korea finished her round birdie-eagle to post a nine-under-par 63 and take the first-round lead.

Kim, a seven-time winner on the LPGA Tour and the 2015 Founders Cup champion, was bogey-free on her first trip around Sharon Heights Golf & Country Club, which is hosting the tournament for the first time.

"I am just so satisfied I had no bogeys. I had some mistakes in the beginning, but I was able to save them," Kim said. "I ended with an eagle, so I ended pretty happily."

Kim, 30, holed out for eagle at the par-five 18th hole.

"I couldn't see the hole from where I was," Kim added, "but people started cheering and then I heard a 'Yeah!' so I figured it went in."

Two strokes off the pace is fellow South Korea native ‌Dongeun Lee, a 21-year-old making just her second LPGA start.

Lee's round of 65 also concluded with an eagle at No 18, after five of her seven birdies came on the front nine.
