Ludvig Aberg tames Sawgrass as battling McIlroy and Power make cut

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLORIDA - MARCH 13: Ludvig Aberg of Sweden acknowledges the crowd on the 17th green during the second round of THE PLAYERS Championship 2026 at THE PLAYERS Stadium course at TPC Sawgrass on March 13, 2026 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Ludvig Aberg took command of the Players Championship at the midway point with a scintillating 63 at Sawgrass as Rory McIlroy dug in to book his tee slot for the weekend.

The Swede leads by two strokes on 12-under par from Xander Schauffele heading into Saturday, after a blistering start to his round on Friday, with an eagle and three birdies in his opening five holes to surge into contention.

Aberg recorded his second eagle of the front nine on the par-5 ninth to reach the turn in a remarkable 29 strokes.

Another birdie followed on the 11th as he hit the front before his momentum stalled slightly, the Ryder Cup star dropping his only stroke on the treacherous 15th.

He regained sole possession of the lead with a birdie on the par-5 16th and then finished beautifully on the 18th, hitting a flawless drive and approach before draining a seven-footer for a closing birdie.

Aberg will tee off in the final group with two-time major Schauffele, who recorded a seven-under 65 earlier in the day when playing in the same group as McIlroy.

Cameron Young is one stroke further back on nine-under, with Corey Conners on his own on eight-under.

McIlroy will be involved over the weekend although is well back from the leaders, having hovered around the projected cut mark for much of his round on Friday.

The defending champion has been struggling with a back injury and could only manage a two-over par 74 on day one in Sawgrass.

But a birdie on the ninth hole – his last of the day – saw him post a one-under 71 to finish on one under par, one shot inside the cut.

He told Sky Sports: "I felt a little bit better. I would say if anything it was just I was struggling to trust everything was OK yesterday.

"I struggled a little bit on lies that were beneath my feet and stuff like that, but today I felt pretty good and felt like I hit the ball well. I really just couldn't get a putt to drop. That was the issue.

"I tried my best, I grinded and made a good birdie at the last, hopefully to make the cut.

"Game feels good, I just went five or six days without really touching a club or doing anything so just getting my feels back a little.

"Hopefully another couple of days to get myself up the leaderboard. I’m 11 back at the minute, I’m not sure I’m going to contend for the title, but hopefully two good days and have a respectable finish."

FULL LEADERBOARD

McIlroy had withdrawn from the Arnold Palmer Invitational on Saturday before his third round, but having spent some extra time recuperating at home he felt fit to defend his title in Florida.

He said he felt "rusty" on Thursday after he laboured through his opening round.

But he returned on Friday and immediately recorded a birdie, putting from five feet on the par-four 10th.

A bogey on the 14th dropped him back to two over but he picked up a stroke on the par-five 16th as he reached the turn in one under par.

The five-time major champion found the water on the fourth as he dropped back to level par for the round.

But on the 582-yard par-five ninth he reached the green in two before narrowly missing his eagle chance from over 30 feet, leaving him just inside the cut mark of two-over par.

Shane Lowry's challenge never recovered from a disastrous quadruple bogey 8 on the 18th on Thursday, after finding the water twice to drop from even par to four-over in an instant.

Starting his second round on the back nine, the 2019 Open champion began brightly with birdies on the 11th and the short 13th.

But once again, the 14th and 15th holes would prove his undoing. Having recorded a bogey and double-bogey on the holes in Round 1, he bogeyed both on Friday, again missing a four-footer for par on the 14th.

Further dropped strokes on the 18th and the first saw him slip back to six-over par. He did rally with birdies on 2 and 6 but the cut line was out of reach barring a spectacular late charge.

Another dropped stroke on the seventh saw him card a one-over 73 to finish at five-over, four strokes outside the projected cut line.

After four top-20 finishes in the past five years, it is Lowry's first missed cut at Sawgrass since 2019.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has continued his recent underwhelming form and just about made the weekend, finishing on one over par with a birdie at the last.

Ireland's Seamus Power, who finished at two-over, was a shot further back after a round of 72, which included birdies at seven and 16, mixed with bogeys on the ninth and last holes.

It saw him finish on the cut line.
