Brandon Robinson Thompson surged into a three-shot lead after equalling the course record on a gruelling second day at the Joburg Open.
The Englishman, who had missed the last six cuts, still had five holes of his first round to play when he arrived at Houghton Golf Club on Friday morning after a weather delay on Thursday.
He carded three birdies to conclude his first round but then signed for an eagle, seven birdies and a bogey in his second-round 62 to climb up to 12 under for the tournament, three clear of American Sean Crocker.
"It was a lot of fun, actually," Robinson Thompson said. "I'm looking forward to the weekend a lot, because it will be my first in about six attempts. But look, I’ve been in the mix before and I love that feeling. I love competing."
Play was suspended at 3.34pm local time due to thunder and lightning in the area before it was eventually abandoned just before 5pm.
Players yet to complete their second round will return on Saturday morning.
