Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry are both off the pace after the opening round at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

McIlroy is nine shots adrift of sole leader Daniel Berger after a level par 72 at Bay Hill Golf Club and Lodge, while Lowry is two shots further back in a tie for 52nd.

Berger holds a three-shot advantage at the summit after a superb bogey-free 63 which leaves the Florida native on nine under.

Two-time major winner Collin Morikawa and Sweden's Ludvig Aaberg are second after 66s, with Cameron Young and Jhonattan Vegas tied for fourth one shot further back.

World number one Scottie Scheffler is on two under in a tie for 18th after a 70.

McIlroy had a solid front nine as he birdied four, six and the ninth, with the sole setback coming with a bogey on the fifth.

Another birdie followed on the 12th to move the five-time major winner up to three under.

But he encountered trouble on the next hole after finding water with his second shot. It led to a double bogey which dropped him back to one under and he suffered another setback on 14 to end up back at level par.

A birdie on 16 briefly moved McIlroy back to one under but a bogey on the last after hitting his second shot into the back bunker ended his first round on a sour note.

Lowry, meanwhile, also managed to birdie the fourth but bogeyed the ninth and 10th holes.

A birdie on 11 brought an immediate response but back-to-back bogeys on 14 and 15 left him on two over.

The Offaly man did make a gain on the 17th but that was immediately wiped out by a bogey on 18.

Overnight leader Berger, however, has been through a run of injury problems – including a back issue which sidelined him for 18 months and then fracturing his right ring finger at the BMW Championship in August last year.

The 32-year-old, though, put those issues to one side as he made six birdies on the back nine to sign for a blemish-free 63, which is one off the course record.

"I think the biggest thing for me is just getting in a bit of a rhythm," Berger said. "When you come back (from injury), you are just kind of getting back into the flow of things and getting into your routine.

"I have really played not that poorly, I just haven't had the results. You just kind of keep doing the same things and good things will come, so that’s kind of where I feel like I am at."
