Rory McIlroy will be back to defend his Amgen Irish Open title at the Trump International Golf Links & Hotel Doonbeg in County Clare in September.

Last month, US Ambassador to Ireland Edward Walsh said that American president Donald Trump may be an interested spectator at the event given the course is owned and managed by the Trump Organisation.

The Holywood golfer landed a closing eagle on the 72nd hole to spark a crowd frenzy before going on to defeat Sweden's Joakim Lagergren in a play-off.

McIlroy has long been a massive supporter of the event and has been credited with elevating its status on the DP World Tour and helping to secure a more star-studded field.
