Rory McIlroy survived a tumultuous opening day in Los Angeles to lie in a share of the clubhouse lead at the Genesis Invitational.

The 36-year-old endured rain, wind and a three-hour suspension of play to card an opening round score of five-under 66.

The highlight of his day was a stellar par-save on the sixth hole in which he chipped over the on-green bunker.

McIlroy dropped just one shot on Thursday to join American Jacob Bridgeman on top of the leaderboard.

The duo were being challenged by Aaron Rai before play was suspended, with the Englishman set to resume his round on six-under par through 16 holes.

Shane Lowry posed a two-over round of 73. The Offaly man struggled through the front nine with three bogeys to his name, before successive birdies at nine and 10 had him moving in the right direction. A three-putt at the 12th saw him give a shot back and is among a cluster of players tied for 54th.

On dealing with the elements, the Master champion said: "I haven't always enjoyed these conditions. I haven't always had the skill set to excel in them.

"To start to enjoy them and have the shots to succeed on days like this, that's a really satisfying thing to be able to do; nearly 20 years into a career and still feel like you're getting better at some aspects of the game.

"I've definitely got more comfortable playing in conditions like this over the past few years as I've got more comfortable in controlling my ball flight.

"If you had asked me 10 years ago, I didn't enjoy these conditions but it's been a shift in a mindset and maybe just a continuation of trying to build upon the skill set that I have then when it does get to conditions like this, I'm a lot more prepared.

"I wouldn't say I enjoy them, but I can certainly handle them better."
