Rain-hit Alfred Dunhill Championship reduced to 54 holes

Heavy rain in Johannesburg forced play to be abandoned

The Alfred Dunhill Championship will be played over 54 holes after barely two hours' play was possible on Saturday due to thunderstorms and flooding in Johannesburg.

The leading groups had yet to begin their third round when, after repeated stoppages, play was abandoned for the day at 2.30pm local time.

Tournament director David Williams said: "It’s tough when you have to do this but we suspended twice this morning and the course became unplayable very quickly.

"Because it’s been raining throughout the day and there is more on its way, we’ve taken the decision to suspend the third round.

"We’re going to restart tomorrow at 6.30am. There’s still about five or six games to tee off, but the third round will be the final round."

Spain’s Eugenio Chacarra – at 15 under par – remains two strokes clear of nearest challenger Jayden Schaper. England’s John Parry is 12 under alongside Schaper’s fellow South African Branden Grace.
