Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen won the Australian Open after pipping home hope Cam Smith in a final hole thriller at Royal Melbourne.

Neergaard-Petersen saw a two-shot lead evaporate as he was tied with Smith heading to the 18th and the Dane seemed to have blown his chance after finding the rough with his approach shot.

However, Smith three-putting for a bogey five meant Neergaard-Petersen sensationally chipping to within 15 feet and then nervelessly sinking his putt for a par four was enough to clinch the title. He finished on 15 under.

"It's been a battle all day," Neergaard-Petersen said. "From the outside, sometimes you can look calm but there was a storm inside all day today.

"But I managed to just keep battling and then to get it up and down from there to make that putt on the last – I don’t really know what to say, to be honest."

Rory McIlroy ended his tournament on seven under after posting a 69. The Masters champions had five birdies on his card but dropped shots around the turn had him joint-14th in the standings.
