Tom McKibbin is five shots off the lead after a bogey-free opening round at the Nedbank Golf Challenge.

The Holywood GC golfer carded a four-under 68 to sit tied for fifth after the first day around the Gary Player Country Club course in Sun City, South Africa.

McKibbin birdied the third in an otherwise quiet front nine but found form after another gain on the 10th and going onto hole consecutive birdies on 14 and 15.

However, it's Kristoffer Reitan who leads the way after the Norwegian hit three birdies on the last five holes to open a three-shot lead.

The 27-year-old holed a total of 10 birdies and could afford a bogey five on the 17th as he blitzed around the course for a nine-under-par 63.

England’s Marcus Armitage, Frenchman Adrien Saddier and Jesper Svensson of Sweden were joint-second after carding six-under-par 66s with six players a further stroke back on 67.

The tournament is part of the DP World Tour’s new season schedule and dubbed 'Africa’s major’.
