Reigning British Open champion Miyu Yamashita came from eight strokes back to win the Maybank Championship in a play-off in Kuala Lumpur.

Yamashita, who won her first major in Royal Porthcawl in August, carded a seven-under par 65 in her final round to get into a three-way battle for the title with overnight leader Hye-Jin Choi and Australia's Hannah Green.

Choi held a four-stroke lead entering the final round but stumbled to a disappointing 73 after a costly run of three bogeys in four holes around the turn. Yamashita, by contrast, birdied four holes on the back nine to come home in 32, while Green birdied the par-5 18th to make it a three-way tie on 18-under par.

Yamashita proceeded to birdie the par-5 18th while her rivals could only par, taking the title and only her second LPGA Tour victory.

"So my putting was solid and I could make many birdies," the 24-year-old said.

"Since (Saturday) my shots were not good, and after the third round, I just practice a lot and then I could make it, so I'm very happy about it."

Leona Maguire, herself a two-time LPGA Tour winner, was well down the field after a round of 73 saw the Cavan native finish on one-under par overall, in a tie for 60th.
