A second-round 69 saw Leona Maguire move in the right direction at the Maybank Championship in Kuala Lumpur, but she remains 10 shots off runaway leader Hye-Jin Choi.

The Cavan woman, who opened with a 71 on Thursday, started her second round in positive fashion with a birdie at the par-5 10th. Despite giving that back two holes later, a couple more birdies before the turn saw Maguire move to three-under par.

Successive birdies at the sixth and seventh furthered her momentum, though the round concluded with a bogey at the par-4 ninth.

Maguire heads into the weekend – though it is a no-cut event – on four-under par and a tie for 34th.

South Korea's Hye-Jin Choi is the player to catch, with her round of 66 moving her to 14-under par and five shots clear of Australia’s Hannah Green and Ruoning Yin of China.
