Leona Maguire remains firmly in contention, sitting in a tie for second place at the half-way stage of the at CPKC Women's Open in Canada.

The Cavan native posted a second round 70 to sit three shots behind leader Akie Iwai of Japan who is looking for her second victory in as many weeks in Mississauga, Ontario.

Maguire sits among a trio on six-under par alongside Minjee Lee from Australia and Thailand's Jeeno Thitkul ahead of Saturday's third round.

Starting on the back nine, the former world amateur number one had an eventful round on Friday, with three birdies and three bogeys on her front nine before going back-to-back on the second and third holes to get to seven under, however, there was one more dropped shot to follow on the par four the seventh.

Iwai followed her bogey-free 64 in the opening round with a two-under-par 69 to climb to nine-under, and being in front of the pack didn't change anything about Iwai's mental approach.

"No change mind. No change swing," Iwai said. "Yeah, just focus my golf."

The biggest difference for Iwai was on the greens. She made four birdies compared to seven on Thursday and felt she left some opportunities out there.

"Today also I gave many birdie chances, but I just didn't (make as many)," Iwai said. "I would say I left many short putts, no distance, short. Yeah, that's why tomorrow I need more."
