McIlroy, Scheffler and Schauffele grouped together at Quail Hollow

Rory McIlroy has been grouped with Scottie Scheffler and defending champion Xander Schauffele for the opening two rounds of the PGA Championship.

The world's top three players form the marquee group in the year's second major championship at Quail Hollow, where McIlroy has already won four PGA Tour titles.

The trio will tee off at 8.22am local time (1.22pm Irish time) on Thursday.

Shane Lowry is also part of a high profile group as he tees off alongside Brooks Koepka and Rickie Fowler for the opening two rounds.

Lowry, Koepka and Fowler have an early start on Thursday and will tee-off at 7.38am (12.38pm Irish time).

Padraig Harrington will be part of the first group to tee-off on Thursday as he, Luke Donald and Martin Kaymer have a 7am tee-time (noon Ireland), while Seamus Power also has an early start. The Waterford man is grouped with Patrick Fishburn and amateur player Andre Chi and they go at 7:16am (12:16pm Irish time).

Tom McKibbin is Ireland's other representative at Quail Hollow and he's among the last group out on Thursday. McKibben, Takumi Kanaya and Christiaan Bezuidenhout get their first round underway at 2:31pm (7:30pm Irish time).

Jordan Spieth, who needs to win the US PGA to join McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Ben Hogan and Gene Sarazen in golf's most exclusive club, gets his campaign under way at 1:25pm local time (6:25pm Irish time) alongside former Masters champion Patrick Reed and Ryder Cup star Ludvig Aberg.

Weather conditions look likely to be damp come tee-off time on Thursday and bad weather has disrupted practice rounds for the second day running ahead at Quail Hollow.

Heavy rain meant Monday's play was a near washout, with spectators not allowed on the grounds all day as the North Carolina course received more than an inch of rain.

Better conditions on Tuesday morning allowed players to get in some practice before a thunderstorm forced play to be suspended at 12:35pm, with pre-tournament player interviews moved from a small tent to online.

The limited practice time could play into the hands of those players who regularly contest the PGA Tour event which is annually staged at Quail Hollow, an event won four times by McIlroy.

McIlroy won his first PGA Tour title here in 2010 courtesy of a closing 62 and overhauled reigning US PGA and Open champion Schauffele last year with a final round of 65, despite a double bogey on the last.
