Leona Maguire endured a poor start to the first major of the year, lying on four over par after 17 holes of a storm interrupted Chevron Championship in Texas.

Maguire, who missed the cut in three of the five majors in 2025, began with a bogey on Thursday, dropping further strokes at the fifth, sixth and 13th.

A belated birdie stopped the rot on the 16th but this was followed by another bogey at the short 17th hole before a late storm halted the round, with Maguire among 24 players who were unable to finish Round 1.

The Cavan native languishes in tied-114th overnight, 11 strokes adrift of the leading pair, Haeran Ryu and Yan Liu, who each fired rounds of 65 to surge to the top of the field.

Liu's closing birdie tied her with Ryu on seven under par to end the first round in Texas on a high.

South Korean Ryu made a strong push early, birdying five of her first 10 holes, and China’s Liu also got off to a hot start with four birdies in a five-hole stretch.

Maguire wasn't alone in her struggles on Thursday, with defending champion Nelly Korda slumping to a poor five-over par 77, 12 shots off the first day's leaders.

Hyo Joo Kim finished the day third, while Hye-Jin Choi, Ariya Jutanugarn, Brooke Matthews, Lucy Li, Manon De Roey and Carlota Ciganda ended the day in a six-way tie in fourth place.
