Viktor Hovland birdied three of his last five holes to win the Valspar Championship by a stroke from Justin Thomas, while the Irish duo of Shane Lowry and Seamus Power finished tied-eighth at the Innisbrook Resort.

Hovland, a key member of Europe's triumphant Ryder Cup squad in Rome in 2023, had failed to make the cut at his last three events and not won on the PGA Tour in 18 months.

On seven-under-par ahead of the final day, Hovland did not appear in contention to win until he produced three birdies in his last five holes to shock second-placed Justin Thomas and triumph with a four-under-par 67.

It was Hovland’s first success since he masterminded Tour Championship glory in Atlanta in 2023 and the 27-year-old from Oslo revealed he was not set to enter the tournament after his error-strewn display at The Players earlier this month.

Jacob Bridgeman, tied for the lead overnight, posted a closing 69 to finish third on his own on nine-under, one stroke ahead of Bud Cauley and Billy Horschell on eight-under.

Shane Lowry recorded his third top-10 finish of 2025

Lowry was two strokes adrift overnight and was bullish about his chances heading into Sunday.

His confidence would only have grown at the start, as he began with two successive birdies to tie the lead early on Sunday.

However, that was as good as it got for the 2019 Open champion who clung onto contention for much of the afternoon but failed to register another birdie, as Thomas and Hovland grabbed the initiative.

FINAL LEADERBOARD

After 13 successive pars, he had fallen three adrift of the lead and a bogey after a wayward approach on the 16th essentially took him out of contention.

He had to settle for a six-under par finish and tied-eighth overall, his third top-10 finish in seven PGA Tour events in 2025.

Power, six strokes adrift at the start of play, roared into contention with a blistering start on Sunday, birdieing four the opening six holes and then adding another at the 10th to climb to six-under par.

The Waterford golfer was now one off the lead but dropped his first stroke after a three-putt bogey on the par-5 11th. He responded well by draining a 14ft putt birdie on 12 and then birdied the par-5 14th to climb to seven-under par.

While the overnight leaders had plenty of holes in hand, Power was near the summit of the leaderboard, although he finished on a bum note after missing the green right on the 18th, his eight foot par putt sliding by for a five-under par 66.
