Seamus Power safely through to weekend at WM Phoenix Open after redemptive round

Friday proved to be redemptive for Seamus Power

Seamus Power consigned a nightmare end to his opening round to the rearview mirror by making the weekend cut at the WM Phoenix Open with something to spare following a four-under 67.

Thursday's triple bogey on the 18th at TPC Scottsdale had left the Waterford native on level par, seven off Wyndham Clark's lead and wiping out every gain he had made earlier in his opening round.

However, Friday's second round proved much smoother for Power, although it started in inauspicous fashion with a bogey on the 10th.

Three birdies and a bogey from 13 to 17 had him pointing in the right direction though, and birdies on three, six and seven down the home stretch saw him go into Saturday's third round in a tie for 34th on four under and three shots inside the cut mark.

LEADERBOARD

Power is eight shots adrift of new tournament leader Thomas Detry, who shot eight birdies on Friday to take a two-shot lead into the weekend.

Detry picked up three shots on the opening nine and continued his momentum with two straight birdies out of the turn.

He also carded birdies on the 13th, 16th and 17th, with a dropped shot on the 14th the only blemish on a stellar round of seven-under 64.

He sits two shots ahead of American duo Alex Smalley and Michael Kim on 10 under - with the latter flying up the leaderboard on Friday with a score of 63.

The highlight of the day went to Argentina's Emiliano Grillo, who hit a slam-dunk ace on the par-three 16th on the way to carding a 69.

Scotland's Robert Macintyre sits on five under, alongside opening-round leader Clark, who fell back to earth on Friday with a two-over 73.
