Conor Purcell has work to do to make the cut at the Kenya Open after an opening round three-over par 73 where Darius van Driel of the Netherlands leads the way on five-under par.
The 26-year-old made a solid start teeing off at the 10th before carding bogeys at 14 (his fifth hole) and 16.
A birdie at the 17th was a step in the right direction, but the front nine was more up and down at Muthaiga Golf Club
The sole Irish competitor in the field, he didn't manage a par between the third and eighth holes, with four bogeys alongside two birdies, the par-3 fifth and par-5 seventh.
The Dubliner is tied for 106th, with the leading 65 players and ties to make the final two rounds.
At the top of the leaderboard, Van Driel, after a 66, is a shot ahead of a group of half a dozen players after a round that included two bogeys, five birdies and an eagle at the par-five 10th hole.
