Lucas Glover eclipsed Patrick Cantlay in a playoff to win the FedEx St Jude Championship, with Rory McIlroy having to settle for a share of third place.
McIlroy carded a final round of 65 in Memphis to finish just one shot behind the aforementioned duo after regulation play. Three birdies in the first four holes saw the reigning FedEx champion quickly make ground on the leaders, having started the day five shots in arrears.
However a run of eight straight pars would always leave McIlroy chasing, even though he would pick up further birdies on 13 and 18 to finish 14 under alongside Tommy Fleetwood, a shot adrift of Glover and Cantly.
Indeed, Fleetwood was unable to sink a birdie chance on his last hole which would have propelled him into the playoff.
For McIlroy, victory would have seen him overtake Scottie Scheffler as world number one, but the Hollywood star was still accentuating the positives as he looks ahead to next week's second playoff event, the BMW Championship.
"Tee to green, I felt really good. As I said back at The Open, I found something at the Travelers and it's just been a continuation of that.
"I guess it feels like a week of what could have been. Yeah, look, again, everyone in this field could think about the shots that they could have saved over the course of the four days, but I just think with how good my game has felt from tee to green, I could have maybe taken more advantage of that over the last few days.
"But still, it's another really solid tournament. If anything, it's another, I guess, block in the wall in terms of like building the confidence, and from where my confidence was at the PGA Championship in May to where it is now, it's completely different.
"I've been on a nice little run, and I have to keep it in perspective, and I'm feeling really good about everything."
"Tee to green. I'm really, really happy and if I can just convert a few more, I'll be right there."
Glover, 43, ultimately claimed victory with a par on the 18th hole playoff after Cantlay found water off the tee.
Speaking after his victory, which comes just a week after he landing the Wyndham Championship, Glover said: "If you would have told me this three months ago, I'd tell you you're crazy.
"But at the same time, if you asked me legitimately did I think I was capable, I'd say yes, even then. It's just one of those sad ways athletes are wired.
"We always believe in ourselves no matter how bad it is."
Glover was ranked 119th in the world prior to the Wyndham Championship, but now sits 30th. He now has six PGA Tour titles to his name, most famously the 2009 US Open at Bethpage Black. The back-to-back wins have potentially put him in the frame for a first ever Ryder Cup pick.
