Rory McIlroy saved the best for last as he shot his low round of the week to claim victory at the Canadian Open, and in the process defended a title for the first time on the PGA Tour.

McIlroy went into the final day in a share of the lead, but five birdies by the turn had him ahead in his own right.

He added further birdies at 10, 11 and 12 before a slight wobble where he hit two bogeys in four holes.

This was McIlroy's lowest round of the week

But the county Down man steadied the ship, finishing with two birdies to get around in 62 and win by two shots from Tony Finau.

"This is a day I'll remember for a long, long time," McIlroy said on CBS after his victory. "Twenty first PGA Tour win, one more than someone else, that gave me a little extra incentive today and happy to get it done."

The reference there was to Greg Norman, the CEO of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Invitational Series, whose maiden event finished on Saturday.

Finau closed with a 64, as did Justin Thomas, who was third on 15 under, while Justin Rose hit the best round of the day, a 10-under 60 earning him a share of fourth place, a shot further back.

Shane Lowry finished in a tie for 10th after closing 66, which was also his low round of the week. He managed five birdies and three bogeys, as well as an eagle on the 10th.

McIlroy will next head to the US Open looking to repeat his feat of 2014, when he won the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and followed it up with a victory at the following week's major - in that case the PGA Tour Championship. He was the last player on the PGA Tour to do so.
