Leona Maguire is eight shots off the lead after the opening round at the ShopRite LPGA Classic.

The Cavan golfer carded a 73 at the Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club to end the day on two over in a tie for 91st.

Starting on the back nine, Maguire bogeyed three of her first five holes at the New Jersey course but rallied with a birdie on the par-five 18th.

She bogeyed the fourth but a birdie on the next hole saw her open with a 73.

Australia's Stephanie Kyriacou leads the way on six under after a 65, one shot clear of Sweden's Frida Kinhult.

"(It's the) first time in contention on the LPGA, so, I mean, I'll definitely be nervous, but I'll be pretty excited," said Kyriacou of Saturday's second round.

LEADERBOARD

Kyriacou missed the cut in each of her three most recent events and has never finished higher than 13th place on the tour.

On Friday, she posted her lowest-ever LPGA Tour round and emerged with a first-round lead for the first time. Kyriacou produced a bogey-free card that featured consecutive birdies to close the front nine.

Frida Kinhult, a 22-year-old former Florida State player, is also seeking her first tour victory. Playing the back nine first, she sat at 1 under through the break before an eventful front nine.

She made three birdies in a four-hole span from holes two to five, then gave a stroke back with a bogey at the sixth. Kinhult capped her round with an eagle on the par-five ninth hole. Her second-shot approach from 230 yards landed within in 13 feet of the cup, and she sank the eagle putt.

Canada's Brooke M Henderson, South Korea's Jin Young Ko and the Philippines' Dottie Ardina are tied for third at four under.

Defending champion Celine Boutier of France is tied for 35th place at one under.
