Rory McIlroy sits three off the lead at the Memorial Tournament after a three-under 69 left him well positioned to make a weekend charge in Dublin, Ohio.
McIlroy opened his tournament with a two-under 70 and improved on that on Friday to move to five-under overall.
Australian Cameron Smith also carded a second-round 69 to get to eight-under and the outright lead.
The world number three, who started the day in a six-way tie at the top, mixed four birdies with a bogey as he carded a 69 to finish eight under par at Muirfield Village Golf Club.
Denny McCarthy of the US and South Korean KH Lee were each one stroke behind, followed closely at six under by Americans Davis Riley, Cameron Young, Luke List, Billy Horschel and Venezuela's Jhonattan Vegas.
Reigning champion Patrick Cantlay was also at three under while 2020 victor Jon Rahm was a further stroke behind.
Shane Lowry slipped down the leaderboard as an even-par 72 left him on three-over. The Offaly man had an up-and-down back nine but a birdie on 17 at least sent him to the clubhouse on something of a high.
Seamus Power meanwhile has missed the cut. The Waterford man shot a four-over 76 which left him on four-over for the tournament, two shots outside the cut mark.
