Joaquin Niemann leads the way entering the final round at the Genesis Invitational with Rory McIlroy 12 shots adrift.

McIlroy carded a third-round 67 to climb up the leaderboard in California and into an eight way tie for 18th alongside fellow multiple major winner Jordan Spieth on seven under.

McIlroy shot six birdies but dropped two shots with bogeys on 12 and 15.

Chile's Niemann followed up his excellent consecutive opening rounds of 63 with a solid three-under 68 to finish the third day of action on 19 under, three clear of USA's Cameron Young, who is a further three shots ahead of Viktor Hovland of Norway.

Justin Thomas, who began the day in third place, shot a one-under 70 to end the day at -12.
