Leona Maguire hit her highest round of her week as Nelly Korda defended her Pelican Championship title on Sunday after a play-off.

There was better news for Stephanie Meadow, who retained her LPGA Tour card for next season after a final round 70 left her with a four-under total for the tournament.

Needing to finish inside the top 100 in the points table, Meadow's tie for 47th was just enough - moving her up one spot from 101st.

Maguire finished 17th on that list, and 19th on the money list after earning over $820,000 in her second full season on the tour.

The Cavan golfer hit the tournament record low round on Thursday, and went into the last day four off the leading pair but it never quite clicked as her challenge faded.

It started at the opening hole as she hit her first bogey of the day and, although she had that shot back on the third, she dropped a further three shots - including a double bogey on the eighth - to reach the turn at -9.

Further dropped shots at 15 and 17 saw her finish on seven under in a tie for 28th place.

Korda had shared the lead overnight with Lexi Thompson, and the duo battled away all afternoon until the 16th. There, Korda appeared to derail the defence of her title with a triple bogey.

But Thompson couldn't capitalise, hitting back-to-back bogeys - including a missed five-footer on the last - to force a play-off, alongside Lydia Ko and Sei Young Kim.

Korda regained her composure, finding the green on the first play-off hole - the 18th - before rolling in a 15-footer for victory.
