American Patrick Cantlay remains ahead of the pack following the first round of the Tour Championship at East Lake – the PGA Tour's season-ending event.

Rory McIlroy, meanwhile, remains in the middle of the 30-player pack as a round of 68 left him on four-under for the Championship.

The Holywood golfer dropped into a tie for 17th after an untidy back nine and that leaves him needing something spectacular if he is to get back into the race for the $15m on offer for the winner.

Birdies at the second, fourth, eighth and 10th had moved him up to four-under on the day and six-under overall, but he would drop three shots coming in before repairing some of the damage with a birdie on 18.

Cantlay started the day two shots ahead of the field on 10-under, and a three-under round of 67 kept him two shots clear of Spain’s Jon Rahm.

The in-form California golfer picked up birdies at the third and sixth holes, but dropped a shot at the par-five fifth. His back nine was steady though with the only non-par hole coming at the 12th where he picked up another birdie.

A round of 65 meant that world number one Rahm was hot on the heels of Cantlay. It could have been much better for the Spaniard too as back-to-back bogeys at the seventh and eighth set him back.

Bryson DeChambeau, who lost to Cantlay in a play-off last week, birdied the last to shoot 69 and join Harris English, who had a hole-in-one on 15, on eight-under.
