American Nelly Korda was pushed all the way by Ireland's Leona Maguire before winning the Meijer LPGA Classic on Sunday.

Korda carded a closing 67 in Grand Rapids to finish 25 under par, two shots ahead of nearest rival Maguire, who capped a superb week with a bogey-free final round of 66.

The victory, which was Korda’s second of the season and the fifth of her career, was set up by a superb third round of 62 which took her three clear of the field heading into the final day.

Maguire wiped out that deficit with four birdies in her first eight holes, but Korda moved clear again with birdies on the 10th and 11th and recovered from a dropped shot on the next with a crucial eagle on the 14th.

Maguire birdied the same hole to stay in contention, only for Korda to birdie the 15th to give herself some vital breathing space.

It is the Cavan woman's joint-highest finish and second runners-up spot on the LPGA tour in two months after she also finished second in April's Lotte Championship.

"Nelly is one of the best players in the world and I went toe to toe with her pretty much all of today," said Maguire.

"This week is going to be huge heading into a major (next week's PGA Championship). I knew I was playing some great golf. It's a huge confidence boost for the rest of the season.

"I'm really starting to feel like I belong out here. Even though it's still my rookie year, I'm feeling more and more comfortable every week. My first time in the last group going into the final round, and really proud of how I managed that.

"All in all, my game is in really good shape and I feel like this was really good preparation heading into a major week."
