Seamus Power is six shots off the lead held by American Wes Roach after the opening round at the Palmetto Championship at Congaree in South Carolina.

The Co Waterford native carded a one-under-par 70, while Padraig Harrington opened with a two-over 73.

An eventful start for Power saw him card three birdies and three bogeys each on the back nine, before birdies on two and four gave him some much-needed momentum. A bogey on five saw him slip back to one under.

Harrington, meanwhile, began on the front nine and dropped no shots in a steady start, while picking up a birdie on the fourth.

But four bogeys in the space of five holes on 10, 11, 12 and 14 dropped the three-time major winner down the order before he birdied the 16th.

In the lead at seven-under was Roach though, who set up his day with a bogey-free six-under front nine which included an eagle three on the fourth when his third shot found the hole from 105 yards.

Roach led by a stroke from a quartet including World number one Dustin Johnson and fellow American Doc Redman, while Venezuela's Jhonattan Vegas was sixth at five-under.
