Pádraig Harrington just failed in his attempt to secure a place at next week's US Open, as Englishman Ben Taylor claimed the last alternate spot for the event at Torrey Pines.

A total of 16 spots were up for grabs at the Brookside Country Club for the season's third major.

Over 36 holes, Harrington carded rounds of 71 and 68 to leave him on five-under, one short of the target but still with a chance of gaining the second alternate slot.

A dozen players subsequently went in pursuit, with Taylor's eagle on the first play-off hole being decisive, so offering him an outside chance of lining it up in San Diego.

Harrington's last appeareance at the US Open was in 2013.

Bryson DeChambeau will defend his title at Torrey Pines, with Rory McIlroy aiming to follow up on his victory from ten years ago at the Congressional Country Club - the Co Down competitor's maiden major.

The USGA had extended a special exemption to Phil Mickelson prior to his win in the recent US PGA Championship.
