Shane Lowry carded an opening round of 69 at the Memorial Tournament and is currently three shots behind leader Collin Morikawa after a weather-affected first round in Ohio.

A bogey at 17 will have disappointed Lowry, following on from four earlier birdies. The 2019 Open champion is one of a number of players on three under, including Brendan Steele, Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm and Rickie Fowler.

Morikawa, at six under, leads the field by a stroke from fellow American Adam Long. The PGA Championship winner started his round on the back nine with three birdies in his opening nine holes and a bogey on the par-four 18th. But he recovered with three consecutive birdies and added a seventh to sign for a 66.

It was not good day for Padraig Harrington after he carded a 78.

Rory McIlroy, Louis Oosthuizen, Jordan Spieth and Bryson DeChambeau will resume their first rounds on Friday morning after play was called off due to inclement weather.

Heavy rain and lightning had earlier resulted in a two-hour suspension of play.
