Seamus Power has been added to the field for this week's Sony Open in Hawaii.

The Waterford golfer had been first reserve for the PGA tour event which tees off on Thursday at Waialae Country Club.

But he will be part of the field for the tournament following the withdrawal of Jhonattan Vegas from the next two tournaments after the Venezuelan confirmed he had tested positive for Covid-19.

In a tweet Vegas said: "It's not exactly how I planned to start this season on the PGA Tour. Unfortunately, I have just tested positive for Covid-19 and I will miss the next two tournaments. I hope to come back stronger from this."

Power is due to tee off at 5.30pm Irish time on the back nine on Thursday. The Irish Olympian will tee it up alongside Talor Gooch and Bill Haas.

Matt Kuchar, Adam Scott, Collin Morikawa, Hideki Matsuyama and Sergio Garcia will also be taking part at the tournament, with the 144-player field featuring 10 of the top 25 players in the official world golf rankings.

The Sony Open is being played without fans in attendance due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
