Shane Lowry has surged to within one shot of the lead at the Wyndham Championship.

The Offaly native, who was among the early starters, carded a 63 at the Sedgefield Country Club which has lifted him to nine under and just one shot behind the quartet of Si-Woo Kim, Tom Hoge, Talor Gooch and the late-starting Billy Horschel.

68 on Thursday had given Lowry a solid start, albeit six shots off the lead which had been held overnight by Hoge, Harold Varner III and Roger Sloan, ahead of round two.

But he built strongly on that, dropping just one shot en route to six birdies and an eagle on the fifth hole.

He will start Saturday's action in a five way tie for fifth which includes Varner III.

Meanwhile, Seamus Power is on three under after completing his second round with a 69.

The Waterford native endured a mixed round - faring better on his front nine - with four birides and three bogeys overall to pick up one shot for the day and leave himself seven off the lead.

Graeme McDowell was among the late starters, beginning his second round from three over, outside the projected cut mark.

The Northern Irishman finished on four over after a 71 featuring three birdies and two bogeys, before a double bogey on the 14th.
