The move comes after discussion with government authorities

The Golfing Union of Ireland (GUI) has recommended that any players from the Republic of Ireland should not travel to upcoming tournaments taking place abroad.

This is as a result of the government's decision to extend the current public health guidelines, that will run until the end of the month, at least.

It means that amateur players who intended to travel to the prestigious Amateur Championship at Royal Birkdale, as well as the Brabazon Trophy, also in England, and the European Amateur Championships in France, are being asked to withdraw from the tournaments.

The advice does not impact players from Northern Ireland, who are free to travel to all thee tournaments. But the GUI warns that players returning after those events will not be allowed to participate in tournaments in the Republic for 14 days after their return.

The association also confirmed that it has withdrawn Team Ireland from the upcoming European Young Masters (Czech Republic), European Seniors Team Championship (Austria), and the European Amateur Team Championship (Netherlands).

"Following the Irish Government's decision on Tuesday, 4 August to continue with the current public health measures, the Department of Foreign Affairs continues to advise against non-essential travel overseas," the GUI said in a statement.

"This includes Great Britain but does not apply to Northern Ireland.

"Therefore, after consultation with the relevant Government authorities, the GUI is recommending that any players from the Republic of Ireland who have entered the (above) Championships now withdraw in accordance with this advice.

"Players from Northern Ireland are not subject to any current public health restrictions on travel for any of these events, with both Great Britain and France exempted from quarantine requirements by public health officials in Northern Ireland. However, should players plan to travel, they must consult in full the Executive's advice on overseas travel here

"Furthermore, in accordance with the advice we have received from Sport Ireland, any players from Northern Ireland who choose to travel for any or all of these events must not play golf in the Republic of Ireland within 14 days of their return to the island of Ireland – irrespective of their point of entry."
