Defending champion Shane Lowry has missed the cut at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship following two late bogeys in his second round.

The Open champion had to settle for a two-over-par 74 to finish level par at the halfway stage and missed the cut by one shot in the Middle East.

The Offaly native shot two under on Thursday but handed both shots back in his Friday outting as he made bogey on 17 and 18.

Lowry began the day with a bogey five on the opening hole but bounced back with birdie on the par-five second. Another shot was lost on the ninth hole, but Lowry maintained his level-par round with birdie on 14, leaving him safely inside the cut line heading down the stretch.

But the Clara man took five shots on the par-four 17th and then ended with a bogey six on the final hole of the day, having found the greenside bunker with his second shot.

Lowry then left the ball in the hazard and failed to get up and down from the trap from a plugged lie, lipping out with his putt to add to the frustrating finish.

Italy's Francesco Laporta leads the tournament on ten under par, one shot clear of England's Matt Fitzpatrick and Spain's Rafa Cabrera Bello.

Padraig Harrington also missed the cut as he remained on four over par following his second round 72 at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club.
