Xander Schauffele stormed to the top of the leaderboard at the Sentry Tournament of Champions after a superb second-round 68 in Hawaii.

The defending champion has yet to drop a shot at the Kapalua Resort after a flawless 69 in his opening round but the American went one better with five birdies on Friday, including two in his final three holes.

Schauffele was one shot clear of 2018 Masters winner Patrick Reed, who he hit the best round of the day of 66 to move to eight under par alongside overnight leader Joaquin Niemann.

Reed recorded eight birdies and one bogey, while Chilean Niemann mixed three gains with two dropped shots on the Plantation Course.

Rickie Fowler is in fourth at seven under thanks to a hat-trick of birdies from the 14th hole, while Patrick Cantlay and Justin Thomas - who rounded off with a bogey-bogey finish - are one stroke further adrift.

Graeme McDowell carded an improved second round of 69 to sit in tied-15th place on three under par heading into the weekend.
