Seamus Power will travel to the Korn Ferry Tour Finals in order to keep his PGA Tour card after failing to get the result he required at the Wyndham Championship.
The tournament was won by JT Poston, his first career PGA Tour title, after a bogey-free week to win by one shot from Webb Simpson.
Power carded a final round 69, but had to move inside the top 125 FedEx Cup standings – he began the week in 144th place – to guarantee his card.
The Waterford native finished on seven under-par overall, well short of what he required in order to avoid the play-offs.
Now Power must compete in the Korn Ferry Tour Finals where he will be among 150 players competing for 50 Tour cards of varying levels of membership for the following season.
"There was some good stuff to build on going into the Korn Ferry play-offs so I just have to go there and play well," he told Sky Sports afterwards.
"It was frustrating as I had high hopes going into the season but you don't really have much time to regroup. You've just got to take a few days off here and get ready to go again in 10 days' time."
Poston meanwhile, playing on home turf in North Carolina, became the first man to win an individual 72-hole PGA Tour event without a single bogey since Lee Trevino achieved the feat in New Orleans in 1974.
The 26-year-old saved his best round until last as he signed for a 62 to charge up the leaderboard on the final day, with an eagle on the par-five fifth helping him make the turn at five under.
Byeong Hun An had looked like being the man to challenge him, having also kept his card clean for the first three days.
Though he bogeyed the 15th, a birdie on the 16th mean the South Korean went to the 18th tee needing a birdie to force a play-off.
But his first shot found the rough to the left of the fairway and he three-putted to drop down to third place behind Simpson.
