The 41-year-old shot a 10 under par round of 62 to sit on 24 under par and keep hold of the lead after shooting 65 in the first two rounds.
Herman is one stroke clear of compatriot Kelly Kraft, who went one better with a round of 61.
Fellow Americans Austin Cook and Bill Haas are four strokes off the lead after rounds of 63 and 65 respectively in Kentucky.
Waterford's Seamus Power will start his final round from six under par.
