Cork amateur golfer James Sugrue is through to the final of the Amateur Open Championship after beating Australia's David Micheluzzi, the top-seeded player, in the semi-final at Portmarnock Golf Club.

The 22-year-old from Mallow will look to become the eighth Irishman to win the title when he plays Scotland's Euan Walker in the 36-hole decider at Portmarnock tomorrow.

Sugrue beat world number seven Micheluzzi 3&1 to reach the final and if he wins tomorrow will gain invitations to next month's Open Championship as well as next year's US Open and Masters.

In his quarter-final tie earlier today, Sugrue came from 1 down after 17 to beat Dutchman Koen Kouwenaar on the first play-off hole.
