Graeme McDowell shot a level par opening round at the US PGA Championship at Bethpage, but Shane Lowry had to settle for a 75.

The 2010 US Open champion enjoyed a steady front nine with a birdie at five and eight pars, but the back nine was much more up and down, with four pars, three bogeys and two pars on his way to a 70.

Lowry however will need an upturn in fortunes to ensure he features this weekend in New York. After beginning with two pars, the Offaly man struggled to four bogeys by the turn.

He steadied the ship however and a birdie at 13 saw him move to -2, but dropped shots at 15, 16 and 18 meant he finished with a 75.
